Letter to the Editor - Sturgis Journal

As Michigan struggles to recapture its manufacturing base, I am concerned that we are forgetting the fact that Agriculture has been, and continues to be, one of this state's top revenue-generating sources; not only in terms of commodities produced, but also in terms of its impact on employment, Ag-related manufacturing and sales, and even tourism. In short, agriculture could be the most valuable tool we have when it comes to rebuilding Michigan's economy.

With that in mind, common sense suggests that the person we send to Lansing as our representative should not only have enough of a relationship with "the folks back home" to understand our needs and interests, but experience in the areas that could very well have the greatest impact on our future.

For example, In view of concerns over finding viable, cost-effective alternative fuels (and understanding the effect that these alternatives will have on food production and prices), we need a representative with solid agricultural AND fiscal experience.  Monte Bordner -- a farmer, agriculture advocate, 5-term County Commissioner, and Chairman of the Community Action Agency of SW Michigan (a $15 million non-profit organization) -- has that experience.

In view of the fact that our "rural character" is a true commodity, we need a representative who understands how to protect our open spaces and Ag lands, while encouraging the use of our outdoor recreational areas, the purchase of our products, and commitments to responsible land use.  Monte Bordner, recipient of awards for Ag stewardship, and member of the St. Joe County Economic Development Board -- understands what needs to be done and has demonstrated his ability to get results.

And, in view of the likelihood that rejuvenation of the automotive industry will be a long, slow process, we need a representative who sees opportunities for Michigan to become economically strong NOW, by making full use of the resources we have in our own backyard.  Monte Bordner recognizes those opportunities and is committed to making Michigan strong once again.

No disrespect to the other candidates for this office, all of whom possess fine qualities and deserve our respect, but Monte Bordner's experience, leadership and common-sense approach in all that he has already done, make him the BEST candidate to represent the citizens of Cass and St. Joe Counties.

I encourage everyone with a stake in Michigan's future to vote for Monte Bordner - 59th District State Representative on August 5th.

Bordner speaks at local forum.

The St. Joseph County Conservation and Sportsman Club invited candidates Monte Bordner, Matt Lori, and Rob Sisson to share their vision for Michigan.

Rob Sisson, Matt Lori and Monte Bordner answered questions at Monday’s meeting of the St. Joseph County Conservation and Sportsman Club. The three are seeking Rick Shaffer’s position as Michigan State Representative for the 59th district.

Water
People and business moved out of Michigan to warmer and drier climates and now they want Great Lakes water, one member said. Where do the candidates stand on the water isssue?

Bordner, a farmer, an advocate for keeping Great Lakes water "local" said while he agrees with the compact in process  in the legistlature, farmers have run into issues concerning the use of water because of wording in similar compacts.  "We need to be cautions," Bordner said to ensure that it is worded to Michigan's advantage. "We need to be allowed to use the water we have," he said.

Government
Another member of the conservation club asked the candidates opinions of township government. Should it be given to the county?

Bordner said, "There is a misguided notion that all wisdom in Michigan lies in Lansing."

Bordner said the recent county master plan is a step in the right direction, assuring that local government is working to be more efficient.

Energy
All three candidates agreed there is no short-term answere to soaring fuel costs, but that alternative energy is key.

Bordner talked of bio energy possibilities in the farming industry. He cited Fairgrove Farms of Sturgis that used bio energy in the past, stating that the Pueschels were ahead of their time. And now there is even more efficient technology available, he said.

Monte Bordner is the candidate for the 59th district state House of Representatives that has the most experience in policy-making needed to be an effective legislator. Monte has been a leader on the county commission in solving problems and developing a cost-effective, efficient government. It’s exactly this type of leadership that we need to elect to Lansing.

Beyond his work in county government, Monte has represented agriculture in Lansing, appearing before many legislative and commission hearings. He has worked with different state departments to achieve programs and regulations that work for his industry. This ability to achieve results is definitely lacking in state government and is the reason

I’m voting for Monte to be our next state representative.

Dear Editor,

The importance of having legislators in Lansing who have common sense and seek to find solutions to problems cannot be underestimated. That’s why I am supporting Monte Bordner for State Representative from the 59th District.

I have seen Monte in the policy development process in Michigan’s second largest industry---Agriculture. Being active in Farm Bureau and other farm organizations he has demonstrated great leadership in policy development and execution. At a recent “Meet the Candidate” meeting I was impressed with his grasp of broader issues outside of agriculture i.e.: education, transportation, law enforcement, budget and finance.

Monte has served St. Joseph County well as a county commissioner for 5 terms and I believe he will serve the 59th District well in the state house. He works hard to understand issues and equally hard to find solutions to problems so that all parties are treated fairly. He will bea strong voice for us in Lansing.

Sincerely,
Carl Sparks
